That’s the motto for the 2017-2018 Frenship girls’ basketball team as they prepare for the upcoming season. The Tigers are coming off a District 2-6A championship season that included a 26-9 record (9-1 in district) and a trip to the Class 6A area playoffs. After starting last year at 5-5, the team went 21-4 over the last three months of the season.
That success has fourth-year head coach Trent Hilliard excited about a new year and a new team that returns four letter winners and adds six newcomers. He says the team will have to overcome their early inexperience as well as a lack of size against a tough schedule of opponents.
“Our players only have a combined five years of varsity experience,” Hilliard said. “We lost 73 percent of our scoring from last year including our top three scorers. Defending the other teams’ tall post will be a challenge with nobody on our roster over 5’10”.”
On the flip side, Hilliard says his team’s strengths include their speed and quickness. He loves their great team chemistry on and off the court and states that will need to continue if the Tigers hope to have a successful season.
When asked what will be the keys to success for the 17-18 Tigers, Hilliard stated “We are going to have to be a great defensive rebounding team. We have to make each game a 94-foot game to negate our lack of height and open up the floor to get good looks inside and out.”
Frenship’s season tips off Tuesday, November 7 when they host Idalou. District plays begins January 5 at Midland High.
