Historic Basketball Season Comes to an End in Regional Tournament

The most prolific season in Frenship girls’ basketball history came to an end at the hands of Plano, 64-49, in the Class 6A Region I Semifinal Friday night in Fort Worth, but it did not overshadow the record setting year from the Tigers in 2018.

The big stage of the Regional Tournament did not overwhelm the Tigers out of the starting gate. Hot three-point shooting helped FHS play basket for basket with the state-ranked Lady Wildcats in the first half. Only a buzzer-beating three pointer from Plano just before halftime was the difference as the Tigers trailed 28-25 going into the locker room.

A quick burst to begin the second half helped Plano stretch the lead to double digits in the third quarter. The Tigers made a late push but it was not enough to overcome the deficit.

Cassandra Awatt led FHS in scoring with 16 points. Maci Maddox chipped in 11 points and Addison Wilson added nine.

Despite the loss, the Tigers set a school record for most wins in a season with 30 surpassing the standing record of 29 set in 2004 and matched in 2009. FHS also advanced to the Regional Tournament for the first time since 2004 and for the first time ever in Class 6A.

“What a fantastic record setting year,” said FHS head coach Trent Hilliard. “This team was never outworked or out-hustled. We will certainly miss our graduating seniors, Haleigh Elliott and Leandra Sepeda, and appreciate all they have done to make this season such a success.”

Individually, Maci Maddox set the school record for most assist in a game and a season, and Cassandra Awatt set the record for most steals and rebounds in a season.
