Mother Nature’s appearance at the District 2-6A golf tournament shortened the two-day competition from 36 holes of golf down to just 18, but with the way the Frenship boys were dissecting the course, the final outcome seemed close to inevitable.
The Tigers’ play on day one helped the team enjoy a 16-shot advantage over second place San Angelo Central and a 19-shot lead over third place Odessa Permian after Monday’s first round. Tuesday’s rain washed out the final round of the event thus sending FHS to the 2018 district championship and into the Region I Tournament.
Individually, Jayce Hargrove finished in second place with a score of 71, freshman Logan Vargas tied for third with a score of 74, and sophomore Kade Smith fired his best round of the year at 76 to place seventh.
The Frenship gold team also tied for fifth place as freshman Leyton Lee was low Tiger with a score of 78.
Hargrove, Vargas and Smith were named to the All-District team while Brian Boles, Camden Hayward and Lee narrowly missed honors each with scores of 78.
The Class 6A Region I Tournament is April 26-27 at the Tierra Verde Golf Club in Arlington.
