FHS exploded for 23 runs during the two-game playoff set to win 12-2 and 11-3, sweep the series and capture the bi-district championship last weekend in Fort Stockton.
In Friday’s game one, the Tigers broke open a fourth inning tie with five runs in the frame. Hailee Little ignited the rally with two-run single, Caroline Kerr added an RBI single, and two more runs came across courtesy a Montwood error. FHS added one run in the fifth and four more in the sixth to claim a six-inning run-rule victory.
Shay Hopkins was 2-for-4 with a double and five RBI to lead the Tiger offense. Little, Kerr, Angelica Abila and Maya Mongelli also added two hits apiece.
Torrey Hogan was the winning pitcher after tossing a complete game with 11 strikeouts.
The Tiger bats wasted little time taking control of Saturday’s game two with eight runs in the first two innings as FHS cruised to an 11-3 win.
Claudia Kerr drove in runs in each of the first two innings. Hogan and Abila joined the early hit parade with RBI singles as well. Little and Mongelli added late insurance with solo home runs. It was Mongelli’s team-leading eighth home run on the season. Little’s blast that left the yard was her first in 2018.
Both Caroline Kerr and Claudia Kerr collected two hits to lead the Tigers.
Hogan was strong again in the pitching circle with another complete game performance. She struck out five in the win to improve her record in the circle to 19-6 on the year.
The Tigers (24-9) advance to the Class 6A area playoffs where they will face Keller. The one-game series is scheduled for Friday, May 4 at 4:30 p.m. in Coahoma.
